One of schools side yard was selected as perfect for planting the vegetable garden. Using one of the school walls to delineate space, a fence measuring 20m x 11 mx 13.5 m, was placed around the area.
Students who previously participated in the EcoHuertos Induction workshop held on October 29th joined the activity as well as other biology students and faculty members. The group worked with the carpenter to build the perimeter fence, clean up the area of all non-essential debris and bricks, pruned the trees and prepared for the planting.
They following vegetable and fruit seed were planted: melon, squash, cucumber, tomato, parsley, basil, green beans, passion fruit, eggplant, pepper, garlic, celery, spinach, okra, beets, carrots, radishes, onions and oregano.
It was very comforting to see teachers involved every step of the way, engaging students and instruction them on how to use a machete to prune trees, how to hold a hammer, and how to prepare the grooves for attaching the wood. The teachers’ positive leadership and guidance with the students was evident, which bodes well for the success and long term sustainability of the program in the Ave María Polytechnic School.
Congratulations!
